Over half of copper's secondary raw materials is pre-consumer. Compared to other base metals such as Al and Fe, copper has a higher manufacturing efficiency and hence much less pre-consumer material available for recycling. It is common industry practice to consider both pre- and post-consumer materials as recycled content, but considering the very different nature of these two resource streams, they should be clearly distinguished in material declarations.
